Chamba a beautiful district in himachal surrounded by snow carpeted mountains specially in winters, it gives an appearance of town as a saucer. It is the state that preserve a well documented history from circa 500 A.D.
Upto 2nd centuary B.C the area of chamba was subjugated by the khasas as it was taken from the kolian tribes. But after that this area came under the control of Audumbaras. In 4th centuary A.D most of the region of chamba was under the control of thakurs and ranas and after that in 7th centuary A.D the rajput dynasties came to power.
In circa 500 A.D a great ruler Maru Verman migrated to north west from Kalpagrama and founded Brahamputra known as Shiv Bhumi and the heart of Gaddi’s country. Situated high over of Bhudal river on the western slope of Manimahesh range. It remains the capital of chamba for about three centuraies (7th centuary-10th centuary). After that the ruler Sahil Verman shifted his capital from Brahamputra to the more centrally located plateau in the lower ravi valley. Sahil Verman named the town Chamba after his beloved daughter Champa.  Before the regime of Sahil Verman the region of Chamba was divided in to different territories called Rahnu occupied by different rulers that kept on fighting. But when Sahil Verman came in power He unified the territories and divided the area of Chamba in to five zones known as mandals. These zones of Chamba region continues till today and are known as Tehsils. These are Bharmour, Chamba, Bhattiyat, Churah and Pangi.
Occasional fights kept at bay on account of difficulties with the other states in the hills. That’s why the damage to Chamba from these invasions was quite serious. In 1664-1694 A.D when Aurangzeb was in power, he orders to the Raja of Chamba Chatter Singh to pull down the temples of the Chamba. But instead the Raja in clear defiance to the Mughal Ruler placed glided pinnacles on the temples. In the 18th centuary even the Sikhs also forced the state to pay tribute to them.
